Multi-User Blogging »

I recently set up a multi-user blogging software, for one of my clients. I googled for a while and came across a useful article, comparing Drupal and WordPress MU. I chose WordPress MU because I wanted some thing quick and with lot of features. WordPress MU installation was a breeze. I then add few themes and plugins. AdSense Manager was very easy to configure and Google Ads started showing up within minutes.

I had an issue creating sub-domains. I am using a shared account at Host Gator. I am not sure if I can use the script found here to dynamically create sub-domains, for every blog. For now, each blog is pointing to a sub-folder. For example: http://domain.com/blog1 instead of http://blog1.domain.com, which would have been much cooler.

I also found that some WordPress themes, like Stardust, are not compatible with WordPress MU.

Open Handset Alliance gains 14 new members »

14 new members join the Google’s Open Handset Alliance (OHA) to develop/ use Android. You can get the latest list of members here. Don’t expect to see Nokia there…yet. However, I do believe that Nokia too will join OHA, albeit little late. The new members include big players like Sony Ericsson, Toshiba, Asus and others. I am sure Android will make good progress rapidly.

Nokia completes Symbian acquisition »

Symbian is the most widely used smart phone OS. Nokia acquired Symbian so that it can open source the OS. 2008 has been a good year for mobile phone developers. With the iPhone SDK, Android and now with the Nokia announcement, we have a good choice of mobile platforms to develop applications. The mobile hardware too is getting better, the new Nokia N97 can support upto 48 GB of storage, WLAN, 5MP Camera, 16:9 widescreen and lot more features.

While talking about Nokia, also check out OVi

Firefox Extensions for Web Developers and Designers »

Click here for some nice firefox extensions that you would need to make things easy during web development process. I use Firebug, Web Developer, MeasureIt and Colorzilla. Of course, FireFTP is a great choice for FTP.

Mono 2.0 released »

Mono 2.0 has been released! For some of you who don’t know much about Mono, it is a cross-platform, open-source, .Net development framework. Simply put, we can now also code applications using .Net Framework on Mac and Linux.

When I first heard about Mono through a podcast, I assumed it just ports ASP.Net applications onto Linux….and that was not too appealing. Mono 2.0 clearly states that we can now develop WinForms on Linux using Mono 2.0. It can even run binaries produced by Visual Studio.
Check out more about Mono here.

Microsoft and Nokia Adopt OSS JQuery Framework »

We all know how simple and great jQuery is. When I looked at using a good JavaScript framework for one of our applications, I decided to go ahead with jQuery over Prototype and YUI, just because of its simplicity. I am glad that MS and Nokia are now officially promoting this framework. I look forward to having many more cool UI components (I know there are many out there). Click here for more information.
